Enrolment up in private schools, down in govt ones: Study  


New Delhi, 23 July: While there was an overall improvement in enrolment at the elementary level in the country in fiscal year 2010-11, a study says enrolment in private schools was stronger than in government schools. Highlighting the increased inclination among parents to enrol their wards in private schools, a report from the National University of Educational Planning and Administration (NUEPA) said that while enrolment in classes I-V in government schools was lower in 2010-11 than in 2009-10, enrolment in private schools at this level increased.
Enrolment in classes I-V in government schools in 2010-11 was 94,088,108, down from 96,222,886 in 2009-10, the report said. Enrolment in classes I-V in private schools in 2010-11 was 38,23,5561, up from 370,99,124 in 2009-10, it said.
On the composite educational development index, Puducherry and Lakshadweep remained among the top three states. and Punjab came third, the report said. pti
